And now…what? First steps of life after uni

Some of the best ideas and plans on what to do after university.

For a few generations, life after uni was considered a rite of passage to adulthood, or in other words, the decisive moment to achieve a life of stability and organization. Nowadays, however, it’s quite the opposite. Plans after graduation can include anything related to working on our values, changing careers several times (or job hopping ), travelling as much as we can or ultimately, collecting all that experience together which will, without a doubt, serve us in our professional future. In this article we’ll check out the best routes to take after university.

The first thing to remember about life after uni: your dream job is not immediate, but something achieved over years

Today more than ever, it’s important to keep in mind that your dream job doesn’t come just after finishing university. The dream job is a consequence of many previous experiences that have designed a specific career path, unique to you. So what can they be?

  • Apply for a postgraduate degree. It’s possible that, once you’ve graduated, you feel like deepening your knowledge or even having a complete change. Applying for a postgrad is one of the choices that many people take after graduating, because it’s always a good idea to continue studying.

  • Doing an internship. Another excellent plan after graduation is a period of work experience. If you haven’t considered this option because you think you need to be a student to get an internship, you should know that there are in fact options to work as a fellow, even if you have finished your studies. Why not take a look at the ways to do this in your country and give it a go? Internships are extremely important to familiarise yourself with the dynamics and processes of the professional world, as well as a great opportunity to pick up new skills and start creating a network of contacts.

  • Immerse yourself fully in the world of work. If you’re thinking of starting work straight after finishing uni, take a look at this list of the best jobs for recent graduates. There are certain qualified jobs that require almost no experience, so they’re ideal to start creating your CV.

  • Volunteering. One of the best options for those who feel they have something to offer the community! It’s been proven that volunteering, both local and international promote individual happiness. If you want to know why volunteering is a great idea (both in your life after uni or whenever), check out more here.

  • Travel. It’s never too late to travel, but doing so at this stage of your life will help you connect with your values. Traveling the world helps you get to know new cultures and new ways of seeing life, something that affects the development of skills such as adaptability to the unknown, improvising and problem solving. And you know what? These are highly valued skills by recruiters. So if you’ve finished your degree and don’t have a fixed plan, put your finger on the map and let chance choose your next destination.

Nowadays, work is another extension of ourselves, since we usually define ourselves by what we do. Life after uni brings the best time to work on our self-knowledge and values so that, in the future, we can find that job that truly fulfills us. The goal is important, but so is the path. Whatever your choice, we’re sure it’ll be the right one. Good luck!
